"This ultimate result, as it bears on whether Vincent Chin’s death was a tragic example of racial bigotry or the tragic result of a stupid bar fight, is remembered by few, but it does not diminish the importance of the case in transforming Asian-Americans from the 'silent, model' minority to people who demanded their rights under the Constitution." - Ross Parker, former chief of the criminal division in Michigan's Eastern District (Parker, "The Legacy")
"Vincent was my friend for over 20 years, and it was very hard to recover from his death. He was a good man, and was missed by so many people! He was very outgoing and fun to be around. He had no intention of being a catalyst for change, but his brutal killing turned out to be just that." - Gary Koivu, Vincent Chin's friend (Koivu) |
"Plaque In Memory of Vincent Chin
The State Bar of Michigan 34th Michigan Legal Milestone marker commemorates Ferndale as the birthplace in 1983 of the pan-ethnic Asian American civil and victim's rights movement resulting in the formation of the civil rights organization American Citizens for Justice. In response to the injustices in the 1982 beating death of Vincent Chin in Highland Park, Michigan, members of the Asian American community assembled at 22828 Woodward Avenue, the former Golden Star Chinese Restaurant located in the northeast block of Woodward and Nine Mile, where Chin was employed. The people of Ferndale are proud to host this memorial and we stand united for the fairness and justice for all people as we celebrate and value American's diversity. Dedicated in 2010 by the 42nd Ferndale City Council Craig S. Covey, Mayor Michael B. Lennon T. Scott Galloway Kate Baker Melanie C. Piana" (Wong) |
“ 'Remember Vincent Chin' turned into a rallying cry; for the first time, Asian-Americans of every background angrily protested in cities across the country. For all that Asians had been through — racial exclusion, starting with a ban on Chinese migrant labor in 1882; the unconstitutional detention of Japanese-Americans during World War II; the legacy of America’s wars in the Philippines, Korea and Vietnam — no single episode involving an individual Asian-American had ever had such an effect before. And none has since." -Frank Wu, Detroit native and lawyer (Wu, "Why Vincent Chin Matters")
